A morally grey character who is heavily involved in Ketterdam’s underworld, Kaz Brekker is an antihero. So why do we love and root for him the way we do?

Sascha Antonov

Sascha Antonov KAZ!!! Such a sweetheart, really. I genuinely loved him in the series 💕

Kaishi Yul-Khaan

Kaishi Yul-Khaan kaz is definitely a personal favourite of mineee! i think his drive and cleverness is a big part of that, the fact that he's always ahead even when you think he's not, buuuut his heartbreaking backstory was definitely the part which sealed it all for me. so much thought went into him and he's so well-developed that he kind of is peak characterisation for me, it v much cemented how great i find leigh's writing

Dahlia Bonrepos

Dahlia Bonrepos I think part of what makes us root for Kaz without first questioning that rooting is the fact that he is introduced as the main protagonist! The narrative offers us Ketterdam through his eyes and we feel that we have to sympathise. Had the narrative been told from, say, Pekka Rollins' point of view, Kaz would've inevitably been painted as a villain, while Rollins would find excuses for his own actions. Thank you for another lovely article, Waru!
