Real Life Inspiration Old Sweden; Scandinavia
The northernmost nation of the eastern continent is Fjerda, a frozen land home to snowfields and many mountains. The capital of Fjerda is Djerholm; its head of government is situated within the stronghold known as the Ice Court. It is also home to the Hedjut people, and its waters house the mythical sildroher.
Society
Though its society can, at times, be socially backward – like any place with a vast history – Fjerda has some impressive technological advancements such as engines and aircraft that work without Squallers. They also have quite the bustling fishing industry, and operate out of Djerholm as a very active port city. Its people are often thought of as traditionalists. While not everybody keeps to the country’s traditional ways, some Fjerdans can be rigid in their social customs and do not take kindly to those who fail to adhere to them.
Culture
While these rules aren’t always followed, Fjerda also has a strict cultural traditions surrounding courtship, which expects a woman’s suitor to dine with her family and bring gifts. The couple also must be publicly chaperoned before they can be alone. There is also a lighter side to Fjerda; its expansive culture includes a range of festivals and village dances, such as Roennigsdjel, and its people welcome any opportunity to celebrate. Community and family are also prized values amongst many Fjerdans, especially in the towns (where, like in any town anywhere, everyone knows everyone).
Faith
Religion is a major thing in Fjerda, including throughout its vast countryside. The nation has its own religion worshipping its own singular god, Djel, and it’s not uncommon to encounter Fjerdans who are extremely pious or who have spent their lives abiding by Djel’s creeds. Accordingly, many Fjerdans revere the ash tree as a symbol of Djel and his power. Upon their deaths, Fjerdans are ritually buried near the roots of the ash tree so they, too, may take root.
Appearance
While not always the case – especially in our timeline, where the borders are much more open to migration – many Fjerdans are pale people with blue eyes, blonde hair and tall builds. The cold weather which is common to the nation means that they are often clad in thick, warm clothing, regardless of how flattering it is.
Roleplay
Though the Fjerdan army has now been unified under the Imperial banner, resentment towards unification and Grisha remains rife. The drüskelle are no longer recognised beneath government and are no longer part of the Ice Court, but many remain as their own independent unit, training amongst themselves and charging themselves with the persecution of the ‘witches’ who have now affected their land, more than ever. Not all Fjerdans have also forgiven Ravkans for consorting with Grisha, and some of them mistrust the Empire for doing the same.
