An Online Roleplaying Game

The Grishaverse series has risen to become a staple in the young adult fantasy genre over the past few years. Look up “#shadowandbone” on TikTok, for instance, and you’ll find over 2.4 million posts – a number which grows by the day. Desire for an online game or interactive world revolving around the Grishaverse has also been long-standing, which is where we come in!

World of the Grishaverse, or WoGV, is a new online roleplaying game which has been created by fans, for fans. The result of plenty of time, care and love, you can step straight into the world you love by registering on the site and watching your story unfold.

What is the Grishaverse?

Think of it like the place where fantasy meets history and a little bit of steampunk. Featuring Airbender-esque elemental magic, underworld gangs, historical eras and so much more, the Grishaverse is probably an enormously expansive universe with a ton of lore to unpack!

The Source Material

So far, the Grishaverse has three series to its name: the Shadow & Bone trilogy, following Alina Starkov in Ravka; the Six of Crows duology, featuring some young gangsters and a heist or two; and the King of Scars duology, about the King of Ravka in the wake of the first trilogy. There are also three companion books full of short stories and fairytales. There’s also a much-loved Netflix TV show based on the books called Shadow & Bone which has two seasons for you to enjoy!

The World

The Grishaverse itself consists of several nations with incredibly different cultures and customs: Ravka, Kerch, Fjerda, Shu Han, Novyi Zem and the Wandering Isle, as well as the nomadic Suli. It has historically been divided by border wars, split into rivalries and alliances, and is home to people with unique powers who are known as Grisha.

Okay, then what’s this Grishaverse online game you speak of?

World of the Grishaverse is a free-to-play, text-based online game where you’re able to explore the nations in the Grishaverse, build an original character, and write out your own story within the world!

You can swear fealty to one of the nations from the universe, take classes to build essential skills, explore the world, join a gang in the Barrel, or even practise as a Grisha in the Little Palace. The choice is yours and endless possibilities await you and your new character.

The main way we interact and build our stories on WoGV is through text-based roleplay with other characters we encounter in the world. There are a number of forums around the site where we can create our stories, as well as other areas for you to work on your own character’s tale, such as their profile and in tasks for specific subjects, like Close Combat or Seafaring!

But what’s text-based RPG?

Think of the way some of your favourite books are written (or even Six of Crows, brought to life through words and descriptions. Text-based RPG (which stands for roleplaying game) is where you write out the actions, arcs and lives of your characters to essentially experience the world yourself.

It’s much like if you were playing a digital roleplaying game on a console, except instead of using a controller, you’re writing out what happens – and have a lot more freedom as a result!

This means that in an online game like World of the Grishaverse, you are the author of your own story, and have unlimited creativity to unleash and bring it to life! You can write your characters in a variety of different situations, locations, and with all the other characters others have created on the site to truly stitch together their lives, chapter by chapter.

So how do I begin?

To get started, all you have to do is head over to register! You’ll be asked to provide a first name, middle name and surname; these are for the character you’re creating, rather than yourself.

You’ll also be asked to enter an age between 12 and 16, which is the age your character will start at! As time passes, they’ll age up and increase their rank (or ability level) through experience and education.

From there, you’ll be able to start your journey through the Grishaverse! The first thing you’ll do is complete a quiz where you swear fealty to a particular nation, so you could either answer the questions from your character’s perspective or think about what that nation would be as you go through.
