The Shadow Fold: Ravka's Greatest Threat
The Shadow Fold, also known as the Unsea, is a vast swath of impenetrable darkness that cuts the nation of Ravka in two. Created centuries ago by the Darkling in a catastrophic display of power, the Fold is filled with horrifying creatures called volcra that devour anyone who attempts to cross its darkness.
The Fold is not merely a geographical barrier but a wound in the world itself. It has shaped Ravkan politics, economics, and military strategy for generations. Crossing the Fold is a desperate gamble that claims countless lives, yet it must be attempted to maintain contact between East and West Ravka.
The Volcra
The creatures that inhabit the Fold are nightmarish predators adapted to total darkness. With leathery wings, razor-sharp talons, and an insatiable hunger, volcra attack any living thing that enters their domain. The sound of their screeching in the darkness is the last thing many travelers ever hear.
Confronting the Darkness
In the Grishaverse stories, the quest to destroy the Fold drives much of the narrative. The Sun Summoner's power represents hope that the darkness can be undone.
